Sub: - Clarifications regarding Post Office Life Insurance Rules – 2011

Post Office Life Insurance Rules 2011 have been notified on 28.04.2011 and copies thereof have
been sent to Circles vide Chief General Manager (PLI) DO letter of even No. dated 06.07.2011. It is
mentioned in Para 2 (viii) and 2 (ix) of the DO letter ibid that Divisional Heads can revive lapsed
policies and also they can sanction loan. Further, in para 2 (x) it was informed that under Rule 52 (2)
of the rules ibid Divisional Heads are authorized to sanction maturity claims. It was further stated
that “to start with the competent authority has decided that in pursuance of provision contained in
Rule 52(2) of Post Office Insurance Rules-2011, Divisional Heads can sanction claims upto Rs. 5 lacs
only.” However, some Circles have sought clarification on certain issues.

2. The same have been examined and the position is clarified as under: -

like revival, survival, loan,
maturity, surrender, death claims
etc.

survival benefit (both PLI & RPLI)
for Divisions have not been
released by the Directorate, which
is causing inconvenience to the
customers.
There is space problem in
Divisional Offices for keeping
PLI/RPLI files, Hence, whether
claims can be sanctioned on the

benefits etc. However, Divisional heads
are empowered to sanction loans and
reviving lapsed policies.

be supervised by the existing supervisory
staff of Divisional Office. If required.
Necessary training may be imparted to
them.

It is not advisable to issue sanctioned of
maturity claims and reviving the policies
without files, as there is possibility of
wrong date entry in the system. It is
